The 2023 Wounded Bird Records release of TIME FLIES by Steve Smith and Vital Information marks the 40th Anniversary of drummer Steve Smith as a bandleader and recording artist. The newest incarnation of Vital Information features three players who exhibit creative imagination and electrifying virtuosity with Steve Smith on drums, Manuel Valera (a Grammy nominated artist and Guggenheim Fellow) on keyboards and Janek Gwizdala on electric bass. TIME FLIES is a 60-minute, 12-track, odyssey highlighting original compositions and re-imagined jazz standards that also includes “Special Guest” performances by saxophonist George Garzone, with whom Steve Smith played during his formative years at The Berklee College of Music (1972-1976), and vibraphonist Mike Mainieri, with whom Smith recorded and toured with in the group Steps Ahead (1986-2019).
In addition to the TIME FLIES CD, the Wounded Bird Records package also includes a 54-minute companion BONUS CD entitled A PRAYER FOR THE GENERATIONS, which features Vital Information in collaboration with George Garzone on tenor sax. The BONUS CD features an improvised 8-part suite called “A PRAYER FOR THE GENERATIONS Parts 1-8.”
TIMES FLIES will be supported with extensive U.S. touring by Steve Smith and Vital Information. Steve Smith, the former drummer for the iconic rock band Journey, has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has been voted by the readers of Modern Drummer Magazine as one of the Top 25 Drummers of All Time.
